Συγγραφέας: Τέγος Στέργιος  - Author: Tegos Stergios

Μουσική: Βαγγέλης Παπαθανασίου - Music: Vangelis Papathanasiou

Foreword 1:

Stergios Tegos graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Ferrara (Italy) in 1977 with a thesis on the behavior of biochemical neurotransmittersin the CSF of patients with hydrocephalus. Following his inclination toward neurosurgery Dr. Tegos started his activities in the Neurosurgical Clinic of the University of Ferrara when he was yet a medical student and collaborated with enthusiasm to the development of this newly established Clinic.

His research activity on the neurotransmitters in CSF resulted in a second thesis on CSF neurotransmitters and arterial spasm in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as in scientific publications after his diploma of specialization in neurosurgery at the University of Milan in 1982.

Completing a cycle of short educational visits to different European and American neurosurgical centers, Dr. Tegos returned to the Neurosurgical Clinic of Ferrara and continued to carry on his neurosurgical activities with fervency and passion until 1984. Then he went to Athens to complete his own formation as neurosurgeon under the guidance of Prof. Doros Economos, a maestro recognized not only for his scientific qualities but also for his great human gifts. Under his counsel Dr. Tegos reached full professional maturity being able today to present to the medical community and especially to the community of neurosurgery this edition where he has collected his own personal, exemplary series of cases of surgical spinal pathology.

The didactic interest of the book consists first of all in the presentation of a uniform, delineated but wide field of neurosurgical pathology; Secondary it illustrates the basic pathology in a series of patients using short videos which do not neglect the difficult moments of surgery thus allowing a more critical appreciation.

For this I am convinced that the work of Dr. Tegos will be recognized as a significant contribution to our knowledge as well as to our surgical practice.

Prof. Arrigo Migliore

Director of the Neurosurgical Clinic

University of Ferrara, Italy

Foreword 2:

It is well known that, well-aimed and calculated movements, which are harmonically correlated characterize correct surgical technique. Except for the diligence and training, a good surgical result requires also the coexistence of charismatic ability of the surgeon. Stergios Tegos cultivated diligently his records in surgery and achieved having a mature and delicate technique.

Indispensable condition for collecting video data was the standardization of the technique video recording in surgical operations. Consequently with the recording of almost all his surgical operations, Stergios Tegos managed to obtain progressively a rich collection of video recorded operations of great didactic value both for himself and his assistants, because of the possibility that he had to check postoperatively the propriety of the technique he had used and to cause changes to it. The neurosurgeon who will watch these operations on video-tapes, will be able to draw useful information which then will probably be used by him.

The book of Stergios Tegos contains a first section when a general review of the commonest pathology of the spinal cord is provided. The second section deals with the presentation of various case studies. The assiduously produced illustration in this section makes the text easily comprehensible. Finally the video-recorded operations make the presentation real.

The many-faceted didactic methodology used by the author is evident. The particular diligence of the aesthetics of this book is assured by the music accompaniment of the video-record composed by Vangelis Papathanasiou with abundant sensitivity.

All these characteristics attribute to the book of Stergios Tegos originality and particular didactic and aesthetic importance. It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate the author on his success and to encourage the neurosurgeons to read this book carefully.

Doros Sp. Economos

Foreword 3:

The inductive way in which any case is exposed and its extension in the description of special case studies makes the subject both understandable and descriptive and the knowledge easy to master. The anatomic substrate, the clinical picture, the description and the imaging of each case as they are exposed, compose any integral unity of every nosological entity. I sincerely hope that this manuscript becomes an ordinary handbook that will be studied by every doctor specialist or not.

Professor Konst. Th. Papageorgiou

Acknowledgement:

Every human being, animal, plant or mineral carries the imprint of the cycle of Creation. Sound has always followed the sequences of change in this cycle, like a code carrying the function and dimension of the universe, being at the same time its generator. Let us go deep into our memory (and remember), by doing this, we will be able to decode the code of the Creation of the universe and, therefore, our own. What an extraordinary and divine key is music!

Vangelis Papathanasiou
